Travel Guide: St. Kitts

The first week of Summer this year, I had a little adventure! I was able to travel to the caribbean and stay on the lovely island of St Kitts. I HIGHLY recommend it! This is a travel guide for anyone who may plan to travel to this same island in the near future!

First things first, where to stay? Definitely the Marriot Vacation Club. Any other hotel on the island is pretty, well, ghetto. The Marriot is very accommodating and quite perfect when you have time shares. With three large pools, beach front property, and any touristy thing you would like to do whenever, Marriot made me feel like a princess staying at a castle :)

Next, what is the great "view" spot of the island? Every island has them, just a spot to see the most beautiful point of the island or even sometimes the whole island! St Kitts has one about a mile away from the hotel. You pretty much drive up... that sounds weird but it is true! You drive up the hills and you cant miss it. At this point you can park you car and enjoy the view it gives you. On the left is the Atlantic ocean and on the right is the Caribbean, it is quite breathtaking. If you hike up a little trail off to your left you can find dozens of gorgeous cactuses and get an even lovelier aerial view. There is even a white "X" painted on the rocks to mark the spot.

Now, what everyone always wants to hear, where are the best beaches? Well, to be truthfull none of them are perfection at the moment because they are having a bit of a seaweed problem right now (as shown below) but down worry, they are still very enjoyable! Marriott's beach is very good with actually really awesome snorkeling and if you walk about a mile down it you can find black sand! They have very handy showers right on the beach too so you can go take a walk down the beach, then clean of your feet and go have a nice dinner without even having to go back to your hotel room! To find the best beaches you really have to go exploring. They have a turtle nesting beach, where it isn't the best swimming because there is lots of seaweed but turtles can sometimes be found nesting there because they love the seaweed. Cockelshell bay is a really nice beach but it can also be kind of crowded. If you wanting to collect good shells though, that is the place to go! The best beach we found while exploring was a tiny but amazing one! We went driving on past Cockelshell bay and found a little turn off and there was a tiny strip of sand. We set up camp and tried it out. it ended up that there was a ship wreck from the eighties just off the shore and it was an easy swim to get to! There was tons of cool wildlife like starfish, sea urchins, coral, and your normal assorted fish.

I have to admit that my favorite day there was the day we went to the British fort. This is a definite must do. Unlike any historical site in the united states, you can go ANYWHERE YOU WANT TO! We were climbing all over these cannons and brick structures from the early 1600s! It was awesome! It was just  this huge fort that needed lots of exploring, and a bonus of totally gorgeous sights! You can't go to St Kitts and not see this fort.

And of course, where to eat? Thats an easy one because there are so many great places to eat that you can pretty much go anywhere. One that you totally have to do is "Sprat Net" Its a totally local owned restaurant and it is perfection! You get to sit outside on wooden picnic tables with the waves crashing right next to you. All the fish are completely fresh, caught that afternoon. Thats the reason that it opens at 6, because they are all out fishing until then! Another place that might not look like much, but sure is delicious is "Bobsies Super Wings". It is a little red shack right by the marriot and they sell the randomest (yet most delicious) assortment of chicken wings I have ever seen! Get the peach and mango chicken, it is the best.

Last but must least, the jungle. When you first fly in St Kitts may seem really dry and thats because it is pretty dry on the outside... but if you go driving into the middle of the island (like towards the volcano) you find a lush rainforest, swinging vines and all. The roads going up there are a little sketchy but don't worry, it is all worth it in the end :)

In closing remarks, I want to tell you to just go exploring! There are dozens of old churches to explore, tons of guys that would gladly let you hold their pet monkey, crazy nice locals that love to teach you about the island and give you fresh food, brightly colored houses everywhere, and even black rock! St Kitts is gorgeous and put it on your bucket list right now!

Summer Time

Welcome to summer time on The Spoonful of Sugar! Summer brings a whole new look to the blog with Travel logs, summery treats, party ideas, crafts, etc. Its going to be so fun! Enjoy the first summer post about what to wear on a tropical vacay :)

Do you have any fun plans for warm adventures this summer? If you do, I have some tips for essential outfits that are must haves! This outfit in particular is one you definitely need to bring weather its to California, Hawaii, or a Caribbean island. First of all, a big floppy hat! Sun hats will be able to keep your face mostly shaded so you don't get sunburned, but still tan. I suggest a neutral colored one as to match with everything you bring. Next, make sure to pack lots of light weight, quick dry shirts. They need to be thin so you don't get too hot and they are easy to fit in a suitcase because they hardly take up any space! Make sure to bring lots of cute (modest) shorts as well. You will want to have these for walks on the beach and sitting at the poolside. Lastly, don't forget your sandals! I bring my "jandals" everywhere because they are easy  to slip on and waterproof. Try to bring shoes that have qualities such as these because you will be wanting them! Thanks guys, have a great summer!

Mug Cake for a Rainy Day

Lately, I have fallen in love with mug cakes. They are the perfect little snacks that you and your friends or siblings can cook up in under 5 minutes and the are delicious! Below is my favorite recipe for mug cakes! Enjoy!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Mug Cake

1/2 cup of all purpose flour

1/4 cup cocoa powder

1/2 t. baking powder

5 T. sugar

1/4 t. salt

1/2 cup chocolate almond milk

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

2 T. peanut butter (it can be creamy or crunchy)

whipped cream

1. Put all the dry ingredients together in a large mug. Mix them softly with a fork until there are no clumps left.
2. add in milk and olive oil slowly, while whisking it together. Mix until the batter has a consistency of brownie mix and if you get any on the sides, scrape them into the batter.
3. Drop the peanut butter in, both tablespoons at once. Do not mix or push it down, just let it sink in by itself.
4. Place a paper towel over the mug and put it in the microwave for 1 minute on high or until the edges start pulling away from the sides of the mug.
5. Scoop into individual bowls, add whipped cream on top and eat warm.

A Fashion Guide to Hats

I used to always say that I hated hats. I really just had no idea how to wear them! Have you ever had this problem? If you have, this will be a helpful post for you! Luckily, I have finally figured out how to wear hats and I adore them. They are perfect accessories and so much fun. Here is a simple guide to my favorite styles:
 1. The ski hat
This one is one of those hats that can look good with almost any casual outfit. The trick it to have your hair down, do not try a ponytail, single braid, or bun with this hat! Keep the tassels in the front and have it placed right above the eyebrows.
 2. The baseball cap
This one is a little more tricky, sure the simplicity of it makes it look easy to wear but its really not. It only looks good with very casual outfits. The nice thing is it looks great with hair pulled down and also a ponytail. Don't have it placed to high on your head though, these will give you tall foreheads!
 3. The sun hat
Sun hats are lovely. Like ski hats though, they only work well with your hair down. Occasionally you can pull off a braid or messy bun with it, but try to stick with straight or curled hair on this one. Great for summer dressier styles and swimsuits.
4. The hipster hat
This one is tricky. So many people do not know how to hear it! To make it look good, it needs to be worn just right. You cant have it pulled up to high or it makes your head look long and you cant have it pulled over your eye brows because that just looks weird. Have the line co a few centimeters above your eyebrows and point the top of the hat a bit since there is no pom pom at the top. Hair down is a bonus to the look and definitely have the tassels going in the front. These ones can't be pulled off with just any outfit. A casual one, but not sweats or a running outfit. That shows off a dumpy look. Shorts are not good with this one you you better stick with jeans. Jackets look great too!

5. The Gangsta cap
These flat billed hats have been coming in and out of style for the past few years and they can be fun. I would definitely advise down hair with these. Probably straightened too. Since they are such big hats, your hair shouldn't be big and bulky. The usually go with more casual outfits and preferably sunglasses. Wear it in the same way you would a baseball cap, but you can also turn it around backwards!
 6. The beanie
I do realize that I have posted this awesome hat before, I just wanted to point out how to wear it!This one is worn with a nicer casual. Less nice casual + beanies = hobo look! You do not want to look like a hobo. Wear this hat like the hipster hat and ski hat, right above the eyebrows except on this one you want to pull the back of the hat a little farther down. Its okay if the top is sticking up, I think it gives it flare.
Thanks guys!

Créme Brulee

Okay guys, so I adore créme brulee but it is just super hard to make! It takes forever for a little treat. Guess. what. is. at. Costco. QUICK BAKE CRÉME BRULEE! It is so simple and has all the deliciousness as the homemade type.

It starts out looking a little like vanilla pudding.

Then you sprinkle the sugar on top.

it melts out and looks like jam kind of.

you put it in the oven for 20 SECONDS at 500 degrees.
take it out, let it cool and enjoy!

what a delicious treat!
Plus, the adorable little jars can be used as a simple jewelry holder!
